Dr. Helfrich Solves Medical Mystery

John Helfrich, MD, of Christie Clinic's Department of Neurology, was recently featured in the New York Times for a remarkable diagnosis. A man in his early 50s came to see Dr. Helfrich about what he thought was merely a sleep disorder. However, after Dr. Helfrich met with the man and heard the list of other ailments plaguing him, he decided there was more to the problem.  After Dr. Helfrich performed some extra tests, he was able to diagnose the patient with acromegaly, a disease caused by a tumor in the pituitary gland.
