The Christie Foundation partners with Parkland College to bring this delightful educational series to the community.

Each year, the Christie Foundation hosts a series of LIVING WELL health education seminars open to all community residents. Covering a wide range of medically-related subjects, the one-hour seminars have drawn hundreds of individuals over the years. The free seminars are held at Christie Clinic on Windsor in the 2nd Floor Education Room from 7:30-8:30AM. A complimentary continental breakfast is served, including coffee, juice, bagels, muffins, fruit, and more. Seating at each seminar is limited to 50 participants.

The Effects of Music on the Heart

Thursday, October 6, 7:30-8:30AM

Presented by Dr. Abraham Kocheril, MD, FACC, FACP, FHRS, Christie Clinic
From a scientific perspective, the heart is a musical organ and many around the world already consider music to be an adjunct to health. In this seminar, Dr. Kocheril will summarize his research in Christie Clinic’s Electrophysiology Lab involving harp music’s impact on heart health.

Glaucoma: The Silent Thief of Sight

Thursday, October 13, 7:30-8:30AM

Presented by Dr. Chris Schmidt, Christie Clinic
Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness worldwide and the leading cause among Black Americans. Typically, glaucoma patients have no symptoms until permanent loss of sight occurs in the advance stages of the disease. Dr. Schmidt’s presentation will discuss how early detection and treatment are the key to slowing and event arresting the progression of glaucoma.

Nutrition, Nutritional Deficiencies, and Supplements, oh my!

Thursday, October 20, 7:30-8:30AM

Presented by Dr. Nathan Walker, Christie Clinic
Learn the pros and cons of the new governmental dietary guidelines as outlined at ChooseMyPlate.gov. Balancing caloric intake (for weight gain or weight loss); which nutrient dense foods to increase in your diet and which foods to totally avoid will be discussed. Recommendations about when supplementation is appropriate from a Board Certified Internist’s perspective will round out this exciting series.

All seminars are held at Christie Clinic on Windsor in the 2nd Floor Education Room. A complimentary continental breakfast is served.

Speaker Biographies

Dr. Abe Kocheril, MD, FACC, FACP, FHRS, Department of Cardiology, Christie Clinic

Dr. Kocheril is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the Medical Director of Cardiac Electrophysiology at Provena Covenant Medical Center. He diagnoses and treats heart rhythm disorders, performs electrophysiology procedures, and implants pacemakers and defibrillators to correct irregular heart rhythms. Dr. Kocheril received his medical degree from the New York University School of Medicine. He is board certified through the American Board of Internal Medicine, ABIM Cardiovascular Disease, and ABIM Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology.

Dr. Chris Schmidt, MD, Department of Ophthalmology, Christie Clinic

Dr. Schmidt provides treatment for visual defects or diseases of the eye. He is available to provide eye examinations, eyeglasses and sunglasses protection, eye surgery, and laser treatments. Dr. Schmidt received his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Iowa in Iowa City in the field of Medicine. He is board certified through the American Board of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Nathan Walker, MD, Department of Internal Medicine, Christie Clinic

Dr. Walker diagnoses and treats non-surgical illnesses in adults. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Cincinnati in Ohio and his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati’s College of Medicine. Dr. Walker has served as the Medical Director for the Christie Clinic Illinois Marathon for the past three years and is currently the Medical Director for Christie’s medical weight loss program, Christie Clinic Transformations, a program made up of a meal replacement system, Ideal Protein.
