CHAMPAIGN, IL—— Christie Clinic on Fox Drive welcomes Rachel Gonsalves, PT, to the Department of Physical Therapy. As a physical therapist in Christie Clinic’s Department of Physical Therapy, Rachel specializes in pelvic floor PT. In addition to orthopaedics, she focuses on the muscles of the pelvic floor and treats conditions involving dysfunction of the pelvic floor such as incontinence, pelvic pain, and issues during the prenatal and postpartum periods. Rachel does this through the use of various physical therapy techniques in addition to modalities such as biofeedback.
Biofeedback is the process of becoming aware of various physiological functions using instruments that provide information on the activity of those same systems, with a goal of being able to manipulate them at will. It may be used to improve health or performance, and the physiological changes often occur in conjunction with changes to thoughts, emotions, and behavior. Eventually, these changes can be maintained without the use of extra equipment.
"We are pleased to have Rachel join our Physical Therapy team. Rachel’s specialty is a new line of care not previously offered by Christie Clinic, and we are excited to be able to begin seeing patients that we may not have been able to help in the past," said Alan Gleghorn, Christie Clinic’s Chief Executive Officer. "Christie Clinic will be expanding this department in November with services offered at our newly renovated facility on Windsor in Urbana."
Rachel received her Bachelor of Science from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan in Movement Science. She received her Master of Science from Simmons College in Boston, Massachusetts in Physical Therapy.
"I think it is important to have each patient’s care individualized so that we are both working towards specific and common goals," said Rachel. "Through meeting with my patients over a period of time I get to know them, and I am able to see their progress. I really enjoy helping men and women learn about their body and take control of their health as a whole."
