The Centers for Disease Control estimates that more than 20 million Americans have diabetes – six million of whom are unaware they have the disease.On November 14, Christie Clinic invites the community to participate in World Diabetes Day by attending the Diabetes Expo at Christie on Windsor, 1801 West Windsor Road, Champaign. The event, aimed at raising awareness about this disease and addressing issues that face the global diabetes community, will be held in the 2ndfloor education room from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. The Expo will include local pharmaceutical vendors, free giveaways, a Community Diabetes Coalition press conference, and a national speaker.
Diabetic and A1C Champions Program Speaker Henry Bryan Jr. will give two presentations at the Expo about his own successes, challenges, and obstacles as a diabetic. His talk, Taking Control, will be held from 9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. and from 12 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. in the alternative education room at the Expo. Taking Control is intended for patients who struggle with controlling diabetes as well as their families and friends. He will help educate and motivate those who suffer with the condition to live a healthy lifestyle. Each session is 60 minutes in length and includes a question and answer session.
The Champaign Co. Diabetes Coalition will be conducting raffles each hour during the Christie Clinic Diabetes Expo.

- U of I extension ($20 value) for admission to diabetes workshop series which includes nutritional management of diabetes + recipe demonstrations and tastings – lead by dietitian.

The Community Diabetes Coalition is a newly organized group consisting of members of: Christie Clinic, Provena Center for Healthy Aging, Champaign Urbana Public Health District, Carle, Christie Clinic, East Central Illinois Area Agency on Aging, Family Service of Champaign County, Frances Nelson Health Center, SmileHealthy, University of Illinois Center for Health, Aging & Disability, and the U of I Extension. They will hold a press conference at 10:00 a.m. at the Expo to educate the public about the impact diabetes makes in Champaign County, and how the Coalition plans to educate local people about the disease and help them access the resources they need.
