Get to know Carole Murphy

• Why I Became a Health Educator
  "A major part of nursing is education. Teaching patients how to take care of themselves must begin as soon as they are diagnosed, whether in a hospital or a clinic setting. I have always enjoyed teaching, and I enjoyed the individual contact I had with patients and families when I was working as a certified oncology nurse and an in-hospital hospice nurse. In working with cancer patients, a significant number of whom had diabetes, and in working with patients who were hospitalized because of diabetes, I became interested in diabetes and its complications. As I studied this disease and met the standards to sit for certification as a diabetes educator, I became committed to teaching patients how to live as happy and productive a life as possible with this disease."

• Department of Health Education
  In the Department of Health Education, Ms. Murphy helps patients and families who want to learn more about medical conditions including diabetes, hypertension, cholesterol, osteoporosis, and more. In addition, she attends special events and meetings, like Christie Clinic’s Diabetes Support Group, to help patients learn more and connect with others who share their concerns.

• Personal
  Ms. Murphy and her husband are the parents of four children: three live in the Champaign-Urbana area and one lives in Indiana. They also have 14 grandchildren.
