Get to know Michael Smith

• Challenges I faced to become a medical provider
  “I was the youngest of three children born to blue-collar parents in Indiana. By the time I was 18 years old, my parents were both older and retired with no money to send me to college. I decided that to obtain my goals, I would join the military. After six weeks of basic training and six weeks of technical school as a nursing assistant, the Air Force sent me to Anchorage, Alaska. I will never forget the day that I walked into the education office at the Air Force base in Alaska at age 18 with no money and told them that I wanted to become a doctor.”

  In the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Dr. Smith offers care and advice for women from puberty through adulthood. In addition, he provides physical examinations, breast examinations, and pap smears and helps patients with family planning decisions, birth options, and care during pregnancy, childbirth, and menopause.

• Personal
  Dr. Smith enjoys teaching, reading, playing on the computer, and riding his motorcycle. He likes spending time with his kids and his wife of 30 years. Dr. Smith is very much involved in the community. He sits on the Youth for Christ board. He is an active member of the drama ministry at his church and participates in many activities there including small group worship. He is also the current president of the medical staff at Provena Covenant Medical Center.
