5th Annual Christie Clinic Illinois Marathon

4/19/2013

The 5th Annual Christie Clinic Illinois Marathon will take place during the last weekend of April. From the Health & Fitness Expo to the Speaker Series, from the Biaggi’s Pasta Feed to the starting line ceremonies, from the award-winning State Farm 27th-Mile Celebrate Victory Bash to the new post-race concert featuring Ryan Ideus and the Feudin’ Hillbillys, the weekend will be a lasting memory for anyone who participates. This event would not be possible without the tremendous support of so many people—the cities of Urbana and Champaign, the University of Illinois, sponsors, race committee members, volunteers, fans, and many more.

The Health and Fitness Expo will be held on Thursday, April 25, 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday, April 26, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. The expo will take place at the University of Illinois Activities and Recreation Center (ARC) and feature national and local vendors as well as national organizations and prominent running events.

Christie Clinic will have a presence at the expo with a booth featuring several departments. Health screenings and information will be provided by the Departments of Pulmonary Medicine, Physical Therapy, Orthopaedics, Podiatry, Clinical Research and the Christie Foundation. Attendees will also have the chance to play games, get their “finish line” photo taken and visit the “Ask a Doc” booth.

On Friday, April 26 at 12 p.m. Christie Clinic physicians will be present for a panel discussion and Q & A on health tips to improve your running and prevent injuries. The panel will take place in the ARC Auditorium on the Lower Level. Panelists include Podiatrist, Dr. Andrew Kluesner, Board Certified Orthopaedic Surgeon, Dr. Daniel Dethmers and Board Certified Internist, Dr. Sumuk Sundaram. The Q & A will be directed by Christie Clinic Physical Therapist, Rick Jean.

Ultra-marathoner, Will Harlan, will be a guest in Christie Clinic’s expo booth at the Christie Foundation table, and he will run the marathon in traditional Tarahumara garb. The Tarahumara are an indigenous people living inside the Copper Canyons of Northwest Mexico. They are known for running great distances in sandals made of goat leather and old tire tread while kicking a large wooden ball. Will will be present to speak about his experiences running with these people, and attendees will have a chance to run and kick the wooden ball used by the Tarahumara.
