See the Future Clearly: Celebrate Healthy Vision Month

5/21/2025

May is Healthy Vision Month, a vital reminder to prioritize one of our most precious senses - our sight. Vision affects every part of our lives, from reading and driving to working and enjoying time with loved ones. Yet, millions of people live with undiagnosed or untreated vision problems, many of which are preventable with early detection and regular eye care.

This national observance, led by the National Eye Institute, encourages people of all ages to take proactive steps toward preserving their eye health. Whether you have perfect vision, wear glasses or have a known eye condition, it’s important to remember that routine eye exams do more than check for changes in prescription. They can also detect early signs of serious eye diseases such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, cataracts and diabetic retinopathy, often before symptoms appear.

Certain risk factors increase the likelihood of developing eye conditions, including age, family history, diabetes and high blood pressure. Additionally, those who spend long hours in front of digital screens may experience digital eye strain, which can lead to discomfort, headaches and blurred vision. The good news? Many of these issues can be managed or even prevented with proper eye care and lifestyle habits.

Maintain healthy vision by:

  • Getting a comprehensive dilated eye exam. It’s the only way to detect many common eye diseases in their early stages.
  • Knowing your family history. Genetics can play a major role in eye health.
  • Eating a vision-friendly diet. Leafy greens, fish high in omega-3 fatty acids and colorful fruits and vegetables support eye health.
  • Protecting your eyes. Wear sunglasses that block UVA and UVB rays, and use protective eyewear during activities that pose a risk to your eyes.
  • Taking screen breaks. Practice the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
  • Quitting smoking. Smoking increases the risk of developing age-related eye diseases.
