National Migraine & Headache Awareness Month: Don’t Suffer in Silence

6/11/2025

Every June, National Migraine & Headache Awareness Month shines a spotlight on the millions of people affected by headaches and migraines. It’s more than just a campaign -- it’s a reminder that these conditions are real, often invisible and deserving of care and understanding.

Is It a Migraine or Headache?

Migraines and chronic headaches affect millions, and they're more than just "bad headaches." How do you know if your headache is a migraine? The National Headache Foundation's ID Migraine Tool can help:

  1. Has a headache limited your activities for a day or more in the last three months?
  2. Are you nauseated or sick to your stomach when you have a headache?
  3. Does light bother you when you have a headache?

Answering "yes" to two out of three of these questions effectively identifies migraine sufferers.

Why It Matters

Migraines and headaches are among the most common neurological disorders, yet they’re also some of the most misunderstood. Migraine alone affects more than 39 million Americans and can cause debilitating symptoms, including:

  • Throbbing head pain
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Sensitivity to light, sound or smell
  • Visual disturbances (auras)
  • Brain fog and fatigue

Tension headaches, cluster headaches and other headache types can be just as disruptive to daily life, especially when they occur frequently.

Awareness = Empowerment

The goal of this month is not only to raise awareness, but also to empower people to seek help. Too often, headache sufferers normalize their symptoms or rely solely on over-the-counter medications without investigating underlying causes or available treatment options.

There’s no one-size-fits-all solution, which is why personalized care from a medical provider is key. Advances in treatment, from lifestyle changes and prescription medications to preventative therapies, are helping more people find relief than ever before.

When to See Your Provider

If you’re experiencing headaches that interfere with daily life, including school and/work, happen more than once a week, are worsening over time, come with unusual symptoms (like vision changes or confusion) or if they don't improve with typical pain relief methods, it's time to talk to your provider.
You don’t have to navigate migraines and headaches alone. Getting an accurate diagnosis and individualized care plan can make a world of difference.

This June, Take the First Step Toward Relief

National Migraine & Headache Awareness Month is your reminder to prioritize your health. If headaches or migraines are impacting your quality of life, schedule a visit with your provider. You deserve to feel better, think clearly and get back to doing what you love.
Let this month be the beginning of your journey toward lasting relief.
