Protect Your Skin: The Sunshine Secret Everyone Should Know

7/15/2026

It's a simple message, but one worth remembering every time you step outside.

Whether you're laughing with loved ones on the patio, watching your children play in the pool or enjoying a walk on a sunny afternoon, those carefree moments are some of summer's best memories. The smiling faces in the sunshine remind us why we love this season—but they also remind us that healthy skin starts with protecting it.

July is UV Safety Month, the perfect time to learn how to enjoy the outdoors while keeping your skin safe from the sun's invisible rays.

The Rays You Can't See

Imagine spending the day with someone who leaves a mark on you without saying a word. That's UV radiation. You can't see it, smell it or feel it, yet it can affect your skin in as little as 15 minutes on a sunny day.

There are two main types of UV rays that reach us:

  • UVA rays quietly penetrate deep into the skin, contributing to premature aging, wrinkles and long-term skin damage.
  • UVB rays are the primary cause of sunburn and play a major role in the development of skin cancer.

You've probably heard this before, but UV rays don't take vacations. They pass through clouds, reflect off water, sand, concrete and snow. They're also present year-round, not just during the hottest days of summer.

Think of Sunscreen Like a Seatbelt

Most people wouldn't drive without buckling up, even for a short trip. Sunscreen deserves the same mindset.

A broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher acts as a shield, reducing your exposure to harmful UV rays. Apply it about 15 minutes before heading outside, and remember to reapply every two hours (or sooner if you're swimming or sweating).

It's one of the easiest habits you can build for lifelong skin health.

Fashion That Protects

Sun protection doesn't stop with sunscreen. Lightweight long sleeves, wide-brimmed hats and UV-blocking sunglasses all add another layer of defense. And don't forget one of the simplest forms of protection: seek shade, especially during the sun's peak hours.

Don't Let Clouds Fool You

One of the biggest myths about sun safety is that cloudy days are harmless.

In reality, up to 80% of UV rays can pass through cloud cover. That means you can still get a sunburn while the sky looks gray and overcast.

If you're outside, UV protection still matters.

Time Your Adventures

The sun is strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. If possible, schedule outdoor activities earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon. When you can't avoid midday sunshine, seek shade whenever you can.

Your future skin will thank you.

Don't Forget to Check Your Skin

Take a few minutes each month to notice any new moles or changes in existing ones. If something looks different, grows, changes color or doesn't heal, schedule an appointment with your healthcare provider. Early detection can make a significant difference.

Summer is meant for making memories, not worrying about sun damage. Healthy skin starts with sun safety. With just a few simple habits, you can protect yourself and the people you love while enjoying every sunny adventure the season has to offer.
