GLP-1 Medications and Your Skin

8/4/2026

GLP-1 medications have changed the landscape of weight management and diabetes care. Medications like semaglutide and tirzepatide are helping millions of people improve their health, lower their risk of chronic disease, and achieve weight loss that previously felt out of reach.

As a dermatologist, one of the most common questions I hear is: “Will these medications affect my skin?” The short answer is yes—but not always in the ways social media suggests. Let’s separate fact from fiction.

The medication itself isn’t melting away collagen or aging your skin overnight. Instead, rapid weight loss reduces fat throughout your body—including your face. Facial fat provides youthful volume and support. As that volume decreases, you may notice:

  • More visible cheekbones
  • Hollowing under the eyes
  • More pronounced smile lines
  • Increased skin laxity
  • Wrinkles that appear more noticeable

The same changes can happen after any significant weight loss, whether through diet, exercise, bariatric surgery or GLP-1 medications so maintaining healthy skin becomes especially important during weight loss.

Why Does My Skin Feel Dry?
Many people eat less and drink less while taking GLP-1 medications. Even mild dehydration can contribute to:

  • Dry skin
  • Flaking
  • Increased sensitivity
  • Dull appearance

Hydration matters for your overall health and can make a noticeable difference in how your skin looks and feels.

Loose Skin: Can It Be Prevented?
Loose skin is one of the most common concerns after significant weight loss. Unfortunately, there isn’t a cream that can completely prevent it.
Several factors influence how much loose skin develops:

  • Amount of weight lost
  • Speed of weight loss
  • Age
  • Genetics
  • Sun damage
  • Smoking history
  • Muscle mass

While we can’t eliminate the risk, we can improve skin quality and support the tissues underneath.

How to Protect Your Skin During Weight Loss
Think of your skin as an organ that needs nutrition just like your muscles. Here are my top recommendations:

Prioritize Protein
Protein provides the building blocks your body needs to maintain muscle and support healthy skin.

Lift Weights
Resistance training helps preserve muscle, improves body composition, and provides support beneath the skin.

Lose Weight Gradually
When possible, slower weight loss gives your skin more time to adapt.

Stay Hydrated
Aim to drink enough fluids throughout the day, especially if you’re eating less than usual.

Wear Sunscreen Every Day
UV damage accelerates collagen breakdown. Daily SPF is one of the most effective anti-aging habits you can adopt.

Consider a Retinoid
Prescription or over-the-counter retinoids stimulate collagen production over time and can improve fine lines and skin texture.

Don’t Neglect Moisturizer

Look for moisturizers containing ingredients such as:

  • Ceramides
  • Hyaluronic acid
  • Glycerin

These help strengthen the skin barrier and improve hydration.

When Should You See a Dermatologist?

  • Schedule an evaluation if you notice:
  • Hair shedding lasting longer than six months
  • Severe skin laxity that concerns you
  • Persistent rashes
  • Injection-site reactions that worsen
  • Sudden or unusual skin changes

A dermatologist can recommend treatments ranging from topical skincare and prescription medications to lasers, biostimulatory injectables, fillers or other procedures based on your goals.

GLP-1 medications are powerful tools that can improve overall health and quality of life. While they can lead to noticeable changes in the skin, most of these changes are related to weight loss itself—not damage caused by the medication.

Healthy weight loss and healthy skin can absolutely go hand in hand—with the right expectations and a thoughtful approach.
