What is low-dose CT lung cancer screening?
Low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) is a type of CT scan that uses a lower amount of radiation than a standard chest CT to create detailed images of the lungs. It is used to screen for lung cancer in people who are at higher risk, including those with a significant history of smoking.
LDCT screening can help detect lung cancer before symptoms appear, when it may be easier to treat. The screening is quick and noninvasive and does not require needles or contrast dye.
Who is eligible?
You may be eligible if you:
- Are 50-77 years old
- Have at least a 20 pack-year smoking history
- A pack-year is equal to smoking 1 pack (or about 20 cigarettes) per day for a year. For example, a person could have a 20 pack-year history by smoking 1 pack a day for 20 years, or by smoking 2 packs a day for 10 years.
- Are a current smoker or have quit within the past 15 years
Why does screening matter?
Lung cancer often does not cause symptoms until it has reached a more advanced stage. Lung cancer screening uses low-dose CT to look for signs of lung cancer before symptoms develop, which can help find the disease earlier.
For people who are at higher risk of developing lung cancer, regular screening can help detect cancer at an earlier stage, when treatment may be more effective.
