Warmer weather is finally here which means we’ll be spending more time outdoors. This is a good time to transition your skincare routine to a sunshine-friendly regimen. It may seem like we’ve been in hibernation for months, so it may be common to forget to put on sun protection. Here are our Top 10 Tips for your skincare routine this spring:
- Sun protection, sun protection and sun protection! We recommend a broad spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher). Find a sunscreen with a physical blocker, such as zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. Sunscreen should be reapplied every 2 hours.
- Avoid a sunburn! A sunburn may fade, but that UV radiation causes long-term skin damage, like wrinkling, brown spots, and potentially skin cancer.
- Seek out shade and avoid the midday sun.
- Wear sun protective clothing, such as a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, long-sleeve shirt and pants.
- Drink plenty of water. Hydration is important for our skin all year long.
- Choose a lightweight moisturizer and facial wash that will not clog pores. Vanicream and CeraVe brands offer a variety of hydrating moisturizers and cleansers.
- Simplify your routine by finding a face moisturizer with SPF. EltaMD UV Daily Moisturizer Tinted or Non-Tinted are both great options.
- Apply a vitamin C serum in the morning to help your skin fight oxidative stress from the sun. This will also help with hyperpigmentation that comes from sun damage.
- Add an oral vitamin D supplement to your daily routine.
- Do you have a family history of skin cancer? Schedule an annual full-body skin exam with your dermatologist.
